3 Fast Ways to Kick Your Confidence into High Gear

Course from Laura Honeycutt, PCC, CPC, ELI-MP

Imposter Syndrome -

A collection of feelings of inadequacy that persists despite evident success. Such imposters suffer from chronic self-doubt and a sense of intellectual fraudulence that override any feelings of success or external proof of their competence. They seem unable to internalize their accomplishments, however successful they are in their field. High Achieving, highly successful people often suffer, so imposter syndrome does not equate with low self-esteem or a lack of self-confidence. -The Harvard Business Review

The feeling of “what you are bringing to the table somehow doesn't measure up.”

Imposter Syndrome manifests itself when our inner critic, or as Laura calls it, you inner gremlin comes out and starts talking to you. Your inner critic will never go away, but you can learn to tame it and channel that energy elsewhere.

FOPO - Fear of Other People’s Opinions

FOPO is related to our energy. There are two types of energy;

  • Catabolic Energy - contracting, heavy, resisting, unhappy, draining

  • Anabolic Energy -  expanding, light, growth-orientated, fueling, happy

Figure out ways in which you see your catabolic energy show up the most at work? Is it worrying, overworking, Yes-ing?

When you are focusing on Catabolic energy, you are not focusing on what you have to do to do your job well.

Raise your frequency with these three strategies

Banish Interpretations

Interpretation definition - when you see someone do something or hear someone say something, and you form an interpretation of what that says about you and it is not good.

When we start looking externally and outside of ourselves to confirm who we are and how good we are, we can easily fall into a trap.

Three steps to managing interpretations

  1. Stop and take a deep breath

  2. Ask yourself; what's really going on here?

  3. Think of other interpretations and choose another one?

Accommodation Detox

Women are 48% more likely to volunteer for non promotable tasks at work.

Planning holiday parties, serving on a low level committee, filling in for a colleague.

Women are asked more to do these tasks. Men are 50% likely to do these tasks when asked and women 76% more likely to take them on when asked.

Three ways to dodge non-promotable tasks

  1. Helpful deflect - let me introduce you to this person

  2. Politely decline - I don’t think I am the best person to do this. Own your strengths.

  3. Just say no! - Get comfortable sitting in silence when a call for volunteers comes up.

Self talk can cause you to start believing your negative voice/energy.

Three steps to managing negative self talk

  1. Notice when the inner critic steps in, what is it saying?

  1. Get curious - what is it trying to tell me? What is it trying to protect you from?

  2. Reframe what you are hearing to positive energy.

Stop Negative Self Talk
